Opera Mini 5 For BlackBerry Now Out Of Beta

Opera Mini 5 is now out of beta. I haven’t tested it out yet, however, knowing how much better the beta was than the native BlackBerry Browser I feel pretty confident in saying that this is a must download for BlackBerry Storm and Storm2 users.

Opera Mini Launching in App World this Quarter

I was on the phone with Philip Gronvold, US Manager of Business Development at Opera Software recently, and he told me Opera Mini will be available in App World during this quarter. Apparently, the news is already public and was casually slipped into a press release somewhere, but I can’t find it from Google. Maybe an adept reader will find the news and comment a link.

This news is really interesting because it highlights one of the major advantages of going with BlackBerry versus Apple. RIM doesn’t fear competition, they embrace it. Apple would never let any third party application compete with a first party application such as a browser. It would be really incredible if RIM opened up more of their APIs to Opera, allowing them to integrate more into the BlackBerry platform.

Research in Mototion’s New BlackBerry Browser Will Be A “Game Changer”?

You may have heard that Research in Motion has been working on a new Webkit based BlackBerry Browser that they say will be on par with that found on the iPhone by the summer of this year. To let the world know that they were serious, RIM purchased Torch Mobile, makers of the Webkit IRIS browser back in August of last year. Just the other day RIM filed a patent application describing a proxy based web browsing scheme similar to that found in Opera Mini, and recenytly, analysts over at Canaccord Adams have gone on the record stating they believe the new BlackBerry Browser will be out before May and that the experience will be a “game changer“.

“it is a full rendering engine with incredible speed, sub three second download speeds for the most media-intensive of websites, while retaining significant bandwidth advantages over any other device or browser on the market.”

For the sake of argument, let’s say that the new BlackBerry Browser actually turns out to be better than Safari on the iPhone. Is that enough to change the game? I am not so sure that a really good, or even a great BlackBerry Browser is enough to change the game alone.
Hopefully RIM is spending as much time addressing the way that applications use memory on the BlackBerry and the ease of which those applications can be developed. I will, however, leave this for another post.

Bolt Browser Beta 1.62 Released

We had Mr. Miller inform us that Bolt had released a new beta, version 1.62! While we couldn't find out what has changed, we did notice it seemed to render full webpages quite well (much better than Opera Mini 5 beta 2). The speed didn't seem to be any faster, but it could have just been the websites we visited.

Opera Mini 5 on Blackberry Curve, Simple Step to Accept the Eula (End User Licence) if You Tried and Failed

Stopping by the Opera booth at Web 2.0 Expo New York in November, I mentioned to one of them that I used their Mini Browser on my Blackberry Curve.
My version being 4.2 she suggested that I give a try to the recently released Opera Mini 5 better she said for all the social networking sites (now in Beta version).

Opera Mini 5 Beta 2 Now Available For Download

Opera Mini 5 Beta 2 is now available for download. It is working just fine for me on my BlackBerry Storm 9530, however, we are hearing reports that there are issues with Beta 2 on non-touchscreen devices. If you decide to try it out and you aren’t using a Storm or Storm2, let us know how you fair.

Since it is working for me, I will just say that it is mind boggling that a third party web browser can be so much better in so many ways than the native BlackBerry Browser. RIM’s WebKit based browser currently under development can’t get here soon enough and if it isn’t, at the very least, on par with what you get in Android, Palm’s Web OS, or, dare I even say, Mobile Safari on the iPhone, it will be a very, very, long year for RIM.

BlackBerry Browser Choice: Opera or Bolt?

 

BlackBerry does email better than any other platform. It’s why many people buy the device and then stick with it. They’re not the only ones using a push email platform, but they do it the best. Unfortunately, this superiority does not extend to other areas of RIM’s software. The company is constantly criticized for having software inferior to its competitors, and there is no application that draws more ire than the default BlackBerry browser. Bolt Browser Beta 3 version 1.04 Fast Internet Browsing for Blackberry

It's been a while since we have heard from the folks behind Bolt Browser, but that doesn't mean they have not been hard at work improving on their already stellar (and popular - they passed the 1 million phone installs milestone) third party BlackBerry web browser. In fact, they have just released a hot new upgraded version of Bolt which signifies their jump into Beta3 (version 1.04) which introduces a whole slew of incremental improvements.

First of all, they have added the ability to upload too YouTube and Photobucket for your media files. Secondly, the ability to organize your favorites and copy text has been integrated.
