Here's a device we haven't seen updated in a long time, if ever, but certainly great news if you are a Curve 8350i owner. The carrier SouthernLINC has officially released OS 5.0.0.577. Yes you read that right. OS 5.0 for the 8350i.

Leaked OS: BlackBerry Bold 9000 And Curve 8900 Get 5.0.0.554

It always seems that when an OS leaks for either one of these phones it leaks for the other at the same time. CrackBerry has brought us yet another leak, or two. This time it was OS 5.0.0.554 for both the BlackBerry Curve 8900 and Bold 9000. You know the drill, if I have said it once I have said it a thousand times, make sure to sound off in the comments on your results with the latest leak.

BlackBerry Tour 9630 OS 5.0.0.548 Leaked Online

It hasn't been long since we saw a leaked OS for the Tour 9630. Usually, the 9630 users are left in the dust from the other devices flying by and getting the latest OS 5 software. Now, the Tour 9630 is fast a head in the race with the highest leaked build so far. We aren't too sure what's changed with this build, but it should hopefully be better than the last .530!

WIND Hellas has officially released BlackBerry OS 5.0.0.509 for three different devices, the BlackBerry 8520, 8900, or 9000. The official release doesn’t come long after we saw the same version number leak last week for the 8900 and 9000.

DavidB let us know (via BBRocks) that the latest round of OS 4.5 updates has been put out by O2 UK for those older devices that are not getting OS 5.0. O2 UK has just put out OS 4.5.0.187 for the devices listed above. Let us know if you notice anything new in the upgrade!

Official OS 4.6.0.344 for the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220

Here is the latest Official BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 OS 4.6.0.344, its’s not a very big jump from the previous 4.6.0.305. I’m not sure exactly what the updates are but I’m sure they’re beneficial. I know lately there has been lots of love for the 9700 and new OS 5.0 releases, so I thought I’d show our Pearl Flip users some love too.

BlackBerry OS 6.0 In The Works… We’ve Got So Many Questions

According to a solid BGR contact, BlackBerry OS 6.0 is in the works. Additionally, BlackBerry OS 5.2 is going to be released this year.
We’ve got so many questions… The biggest being will OS 6.0 be out this year as well and is 5.2 just a bridge to allow users to upgrade to 6.0?
We know that a WebKit BlackBerry Browser is coming. New CDMA BlackBerry devices already support 3D graphics. Will OS 5.2 address memory allocation? Will RIM make it easier on developers by releasing development tools on par with those available for WebOS, Android, and the iPhone. Will 5.2 be the last platform for older devices? Will 6.0 only work on new devices?
The list of questions is almost endless…

How Will RIM Handle Memory In The Next BlackBerry OS?

One of the big complaints about the BlackBerry when compared to other smartphones is that a lot of the applications that run on the BlackBerry seem outdated and less sophisticated when compared those that run on devices like the iPhone and those running WebOS or Android. To make a long story short, the complaints are fairly valid and much of the issue is because of the way that the BlackBerry utilizes memory.

Without getting too technical, BlackBerry devices, no matter how much memory they have, whether it be internal device memory or on removable memory cards, utilize a small fraction of of the memory available to them for running and storing applications. The latest BlackBerrys use 256 MB of internal device memory in which they store all built in core applications as well as any add-on or third party applications. This isn’t a problem so long as you want to run only a few BlackBerry apps that don’t take up a lot of space.

Pretty Graphics Take Up A Lot Of Space

There are games that you can buy for the iPhone that take up as much space by themselves as the available application memory free space on many BlackBerry devices with no third party applications installed. Because of the way BlackBerry devices handle memory, developers are handcuffed from creating applications with a lot of rich textures, extensive 3D graphics, recorded audio, and many of the “next gen” application features the consumers think BlackBerry apps lack.

How will RIM handle memory in the next BlackBerry OS?

We know that some newer BlackBerry devices now support 3D graphics acceleration. Rumor has it that the next BlackBerry Browser will be the baddest WebKit browser available once released. We’ve even heard the RIM is going to finally release a BlackBerry with a full touch screen and slide-out keyboard. The question, however, that I have for RIM, is how are they going to address there memory problem? If they don’t figure this out soon, all the other enhancements may be for not.

BBleaks has posted a link for OS 5.0.0.463 for the the BlackBerry 8530. This OS is not an official OS & you should install only if you know what you are doing. This new version is quite a jump from the first one we saw which was .463 . Share in the comments any problems you find or areas where it has been improved.

Official OS 5.0.0.419 for the BlackBerry Storm 9530 from MTS Mobility

This one popped up in the forums earlier today, and Storm 9530 owners everywhere are rejoicing. The latest offical OS update comes from MTS Mobility in the form of OS 5.0.0.419. This is an official release, so get out those USB cables and update away. No notes on what is new/different in this version, so drop a comment and let us know your findings.

The OS 5 Boot Test: Storm2 vs Storm 9530 vs Bold 9700 vs Bold 9000

Booting up a BlackBerry is incredibly frustrating and slow. Usually it’s best to take the old proverb “a watched pot never boils” and just leave it in your pocket for a of couple minutes and check back. At least with OS 5 we get a status bar showing relatively how long it will be until you can get busy on your BlackBerry again.




Here I have 4 BlackBerrys, all with OS 5 loaded. Two are official OS 5 builds, and 2 are leaks. We’re going to put in the battery at the same time (or as close to the same as possible), and see which one loads first. Here are the contestants:



Verizon BlackBerry Storm2 OS 5.0.0.320 (this is what it came shipped with)

TELUS Storm 9530 OS 5.0.0.328 (I think this is the latest leaked)

T-Mobile Bold 9700 OS 5.0.0.330 (out of the box OS)

Rogers Bold 9000 OS 5.0.0.411 (I believe this is the latest leak)

The winners came in first and second according to the most recent OS build. The winners were both leaked OS builds, while the out-of-the-box OS devices came in 3rd and 4th. For the most part, the newer the OS the faster your device will boot. Now we need to figure out why the Storm2 loads faster than the 9700, which has a newer OS, and I believe a faster processor.



Stay tuned as we’ll tell you all about what is going on during the boot and what factors influence a faster or slower boot time.

A host of OS 5 leaks have recently hit the Internet and we now have download links for the Bold 9000, Curve 8520 and Curve 8900.
