Why Do Blackberry Users Love BlackBerry Messenger?

BlackBerry Messenger
I just don’t get what is so special about BlackBerry Messenger except it only works with BlackBerry Users. Despite being a technology junkie I have never been able to get into Blackberry Messenger. Considering how many people love this feature can someone shed some light on what is so good about Blackberry Messenger?

With SMS/MMS for sending short messages, pictures, video, or audio what can messenger add? SMS/MMS work on all mobile phone worldwide and are not limited to Blackberry devices. I agree with Blackberry Messenger you do not pay additional to send to users in other countries and it does not require you to have a text message plan. Is cost what makes people love BB Messenger?
Is the hook really for enterprise users? In a corporate environment I can do a GAL (Global Address List) lookup and get a users BlackBerry pin to start a conversation quickly. I agree the filtered list of users I can message with has its benefits. I have never used the broadcast message feature could that be part of the draw?
On the surface I cannot find a reason to use BB Messenger. With OS 5.0 the threaded format of SMS makes it look just like an IM conversation. Is it the ability to send your current location, files, or voice notes that makes Blackberry Messenger powerful? Maybe it is being able to ping a contact. What exactly does a ping do. I just sent a Ping to Robb without knowing. Hopefully it is not too bad. The location sharing option is going to come in handy when friends are trying to find our tailgate this coming NFL season. I used Assemble and Google Maps on the iPhone for location sharing, messenger will be a welcome add.
There has to be something magical in BlackBerry Messenger that is just passing right by me. Is it more then IM? I cannot think of a better group of people to explain why BB Messenger is worth caring about. Please someone help me see the light.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager Updated to Version 5.0.1.37 For Those Who Use It
desktopmanager update 300x178 BlackBerry Desktop Manager Updated to Version 5.0.1.37 For Those Who Use It

For those of you who use BlackBerry Desktop Manager to perform task such as Application loader, device back up, syncing your BlackBerry with your email client (Outlook Thunderbird) you will be glad to hear that there is an update for it. It used to be the Desktop Manager got updated almost as much as BlackBerry App World but nowadays you don’t see that many updates.

Not a lot of people use Desktop manager that much nowadays either. I for one wouldn’t use it that much if I didn’t Outlook to store all my contacts and calendar appointments. I usually backup my device with Desktop Manger but other than those two tasks I don’t use it that much. Maybe it is time for RIM to re build it and put some more features in it.

Tips: BlackBerry Messenger best practices

The BlackBerry Messenger is a remarkable tool. But not only does it have software glitches, it is also a social connectivity tool, and as such it has its socially related pitfalls because you’re not just dealing with a piece of software, you’re also dealing with people. If you just started using it, there are problems you should probably be careful about.

Al Sacco, one of my favorite writers on all things related to the BlackBerry, is very aware of those pitfalls and decided to share his wisdom with his readers. He wrote about six tips for making the best use of the BlackBerry Messenger. I suspect it won’t be very interesting for experienced BBM blabbermouths (blabberfingers?), but it’s definitely a must read for BlackBerry novices. Check it out!

BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) Best Practices: Six Tips

BlackBerry Messenger, Research In Motion's (RIM) mobile IM application that uses unique "PIN" codes associated with every BlackBerry to connect RIM smartphone users, isn't new. But due to the BlackBerry platform's rising popularity, BBM--which you can think of as a mobile version of AIM or Google Talk that only works with BlackBerrys -- is suddenly getting a lot of attention. And not all of it is positive. In fact, Web-security-software-maker McAfee recently posted a warning about BBM spam and hoaxes on its TrustedSource blog.

Upgrade to BlackBerry Messenger 5.0 Today!

BlackBerry Messenger

My name is Theban and I’m the Product Manager for BlackBerry® Messenger. So it’s not too surprising that I’m a BlackBerry Messenger addict. I share this post with all others that suffer the same fate. To me, BlackBerry Messenger is about staying close to the people that matter most.

Maybe it’s hard to explain, unless you get into it. I’ve slowly started converting my family (immediate and extended) into BlackBerry Messenger users and I’m already noticing pretty major changes – we chat more often, I know what’s going on in their lives and interestingly we seem to meet up more often too. And it’s ever so amusing to see the few naysayers slowly switching over because they feel out of the loop and left out.

With the recently released BlackBerry Messenger v5.0, there are now even more reasons to connect with friends and family (not sure if you have BlackBerry Messenger 5.0? Read this article to identify which version of BlackBerry Messenger you are currently running).

  • Reason #5 File Transfer – Share pictures, videos, voice notes and more with multiple contacts at once. Plus, you can do it quickly!
  • Reason #4 Contact Status Updates – Now you can see what your friends are listening to by viewing their song titles…who knew they were such an ABBA fan??
  • Reason #3 Group Creation – By creating groups of friends, family, or colleagues not only do you stay organized but you can also instantly share calendars, lists, conversations, and updates. …never forget the milk again!
  • Reason #2 SMS Messages – Now, you can send text messages from within BlackBerry Messenger so you don’t have to switch back and forth between applications. Plus, you can keep your text messaging and BBM contacts all together in BlackBerry Messenger.
  • …and now, the #1 reason to upgrade BlackBerry Messenger: Barcode invitations – Surely the next new fad in the Instant Messaging world and of course, my next tattoo! Easily add a contact by simply scanning their BlackBerry Messenger barcode with your BlackBerry smartphone camera (a barcode is a 2 dimensional image that is unique to each BlackBerry Messenger user.). Want to know more about BlackBerry Messenger barcodes? Watch for an article in the next BlackBerry Newsletter.

BlackBerry Messenger is free at BlackBerry App World™ or from your BlackBerry smartphone go to www.blackberry.com/blackberrymessenger and follow the on-screen instructions.

So what’s your favorite BlackBerry Messenger feature? Post a comment and let us know!
