Bitbop to become “Hulu for mobiles”?

Hulu is currently on a war path of sorts, with it’s content owners closing up holes, cramming in advertisements and effectively killing all the reasons consumers loved the service in the first place. Even worse is the fact that those same content owners (motivated by greed of course) are butchering Hulu’s transgression to mobiles. Bad for them, good for us.

Where Hulu is letting us mobile users down, Fox’s new “Bitbop” will pick up the slack…

At first glance, Bitbop almost looks like a ripoff of Hulu. It has the same basic layout. And because Fox has partnered with many of the same studios as Hulu, scores of similar content is also available. But Bitbop is currently free and in beta. Two things that nerds love.

As Bitbop moves out of beta however, a fee will rise. However, initially it actually looks pretty promising — $10/month will get you access to the entire Bitbop catalog of full-length shows and movies. All of this mobile movie good times will be available over 3G and WiFi according to reports. Again, another very good thing.

Hell, even at $10 for the more premium model down the line, for mobile access to The Food Network, A&E, CBS, TLC, USA, MTV, and more, I’d do it.

The downside — there’s always a downside, you should now this — is that Bitbop is currently only supported on four BlackBerry devices (BlackBerry Bold 9000, BlackBerry Bold 9700, BlackBerry Curve 8900, BlackBerry Tour 9630). However, the Fox/Bitbop team has mentioned that iPhone and Android versions are in the works. Stay tuned…
